Do They Have Insurance?

This is one of the most important things to look for when searching for painting contractors. Since the contractors are working at your property, it is important you and them are protected. While you may have homeowner’s insurance, you should not rely on that to cover accidents. It is the contractor’s responsibility to have adequate insurance as well.

DO NOT hire painting contractors unless they have comprehensive business liability with a minimum of a million dollar limit. This will protect your property from any damage by the contractors. Also, check to make sure that your contractors carry workman’s compensation to protect the workers while on your property. This protects you from having liability for any accidents that may occur. Ask for proof of both insurances before agreeing to hire the contractors.

Are Your Painting Contractors Licensed?

Next thing to look for is if the contractors you pick are licensed and bonded. This will give you financial protection if the company makes a mistake or damages anything on your property. Additionally, being licensed and bonded tells you that the company has met state requirements for the type of business they’re operating.

Painting Contractors Reviews & References

When deciding on a contractor it is a good rule of thumb to check out their online reviews. This can tell you a good amount about the company you hire. With that being said, not everyone is going to have all 5-star reviews. Even the best painting contractors can occasionally get a bad review. The company you decide on should have mostly good reviews. A customer review can give you better insight on the quality of work and a glimpse of their customer service. Real reviews have details and good information, so those are the ones you should look for.

Another thing to look for is references. If you have a family member or friend with a great experience, ask them for their information. In some cases, you may even be able get a family/friend referral discount.

Warranty or Guarantee

One to three year warranties are common for reputable painting companies. Make sure the warranty covers both labor and material in the case of a defect. Understand the exclusions, and make sure you get the warranty or guarantee in writing. This can save time and money down the road in case of defects.

A Detailed Estimate

Be sure to get a detailed estimate from your painting contractors. This will help you decide whether the company is right for the job. The estimate will also help if you are price comparing a few contractors at the time. Understand that the costs are just going to be estimated. The actual cost could be higher or lower depending on materials, labor, etc.

Communication & Customer Service

If you can’t get an answer to your questions, or you don’t have a good level of communication with the painting company you’re considering, it might be a good idea to look for a different contractor. You should NEVER have to keep calling the company to find out information, or repetitively ask for answers. Customer service and communication are essential when looking for a painting contractor.
